Objective:To check following installation can be done by ThinkPad OS Unattended Installation from the Network Driver Unattended Installation from Network

Tools for customizing setup
  1. Answer files (Unattended.TXT):This file contains information about how to automate the installation or upgrade of Windows NT Workstation and Windows NT Server so the Setup program runs without requiring user input. For information on how to use this file, read the appropriate sections of the Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit.
  2. $OEM$ Directory and sub directory :To install components,files, or application that are not included with the Windows NT Workstation retail product ,the required files must be added to subdirectories of $OEM$ directory
  3. Cmdlines.txt :To install files located in the sub directories of $OEM$
list the installation in a text file named cmdlines.txt ,Place cmdlines.txt files in the $OEM$ directories

4.The sysdiff utility :To install pre-install aplication that do not support scripted installation, sysdiff is used.you can use sysdiff to install other aplcation also

5. PS2 command:Use ps2.exe for following operation

Procedure
Network
Copying WinNT 4.0/WinXP source files to NT Server


  1. Copy WinNT4.0/Win2000 source files from WinNT 4.0 CD-ROM to WIndows NT server Shared Directory.
  2. Copy the Network card drivers to be configured in Server shared directory.
  3. Create $OEM$ directory under Nt Server Shared Directory \I386
  4. Create all Drivers directory under \i386\$OEM$
Ex :MD \I386\$OEM$\VIDEO,
MD \I386\$OEM$\AUDIO
MD \I386\$OEM$\TP
MD \I386\$OEM$\UTILITY,
6. Copy all drivers files to respective Directory
7. Make directory \I386\$OEM$\SP4
8. Copy all service pack files to \I386\$OEM$\SP4
9. Copy sysdiff.exe \I386\$OEM$
10. Create nessory Batch files for driver installation in \i386\$OEM$

Creating Answer Files (Unattend.txt ) and Cmdlines.txt files
  1. Edit Unattend.txt file in \I386
  2. Enter necessary information in Unattend.txt file(please see sample file)
  3. Add line OemPreinstall=Yes to Unattend.txt file
  4. Add installation command to \I386\$OEM$\Cmdlines.txt files(please see sample file)


((Sample Unattend.txt )) Has only basic OS settings and Network Card Driver Installtion settings for Puddle2 IBM 10/100 Etherjet PCI Card. For Cmdlines.txt follow the sample file attached in the link.

In cmdlines.txt, change the path where the drivers are located (specify the server path)
Setup the WindowsNT 4.0 Unatended Installation From Network.
  1. Create a Boot Floppy (Which connects to the network Automatically and run the Windows NT Installation From the Server.)and Copy the necessery Network Card Driver files to connect to Network server using DOS. Use Microsoft MSclient3.O diskette
  2. CREATING A DOS CLIENT FROM NT SERVER

    1. Go to Administrative Tools and select start-up disk.
    2. Default path was shown hit enter
    3. Target Workstation will show up from there select 3com Etherlink III in the
    network Adapter section and click OK
    4. From the Network Start-up Disk Configuration window select TCP/IP from the
    network protocol section and give name of the workstation that you are
    configuring for under the computer name section;
    5. Click OK in the Confirm Network Disk Configuration Window;
    6. Insert Disk and format it. You will need to format the floppy as a system
    disk;
    7. In the Protocol.Ini go to search and replace all values of "ELNK3" with appropriate driver.

    8. In system.ini change the netcard=XXX.dos
    9. Boot the client with the floppy
    10. The client should boot up with TCP/IP.
  3. Create Autoexec.bat file which connects to the network automatically ,map the drives which contain Unattended Installation files ,and can run the Unattended installation from the server
  4. Sample Autoexec.bat file is attached below
  5. Don't Forget to Remove the Floppy from the Workstation When the machine reboots

ATTENTION!! Please follow below information.
1. Please check Error and Warning message in Event Viewer before you start the test case and after you complete the test case, and report it to your team lead, then arrange to open defect, if needed.

2. Perform All Test in Battery Mode (Some of the test items need to perform in AC Mode, follow each Test Case).

3. All Test Activity should be performed with AMT Enabled as Default (applicable on vPro enabled systems).

4. Please check Usability / Cosmetic issues (correct sentence/appropriate display/etc.) and open defect, if needed.
